Thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill, that opened up a new era in hemp cultivation. Earlier, it was untouched for almost a century due to legal issues. According to the Farm Bill, Hemp is Cannabis sativa L. plant, including all its parts, extracts, isomers, cannabinoids, etc. with less than 0.3 % of delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol concentration on a dry weight basis. After the bill, there is an increased rate of Hemp cultivation.   

Hemp is derived from the plant species Cannabis Sativa. CBD is extracted from the female plant that is also a dietary supplement and is considered as one of the fastest-growing plants. CBD oil is rich in omega profile that is almost identical to fish oil. The hemp farmers are always in search of the best practices to enhance the higher yield of Hemp for CBD. But, before starting the guide for higher CBD hemp farming, you need to know about the state where you are going to start hemp cultivation has legal permits or not.  The CBD variety of Hemp is legitimate in most of the states, as it contains a negligible amount of THC.


  • The first and foremost point that you need to know is the type of seed you should collect. Unpollinated female flowers produce higher concentrations of cannabinoids than the fertilized ones. CBD-rich plants can be feminized by pollinating intentionally by another monoecious or female plant. This is done only to restrict the production of the male plants. Feminized seeds are highly expensive and produce CBD-rich Hemp plants only. It would help if you chose such seeds for Hemp cultivation.  


  • Choosing the right time and preparing the favorable soil condition: Apart from the extreme weather conditions like desert climates or high mountain region climates, hemp cultivation is convenient in most weather conditions. Warm weather where the draining system for the soil is right is ideal for farming. Usually, plantation of CBD hemp is favorable during the 3rd week of May to the 1st week of June in most of the states of America. 


If you want some general conditions for growing Hemp, maintain soil temperature between 46-50 degrees Fahrenheit. However, Hemp seeds prefer an optimal temperature of 65-70°F for germination and a temperature condition between 60-80°F afterward. Seeds should be planted at 0.75 -1.25 soil moisture. Hemp grows well in moist soil with an adequate amount of sunlight. The pH of the soil must be 6.0-7.0 for better Hemp yield. Too acidic or too alkaline soil enhances nutrient deficiencies. 


  • Favorable germination factors: Apart from favorable soil conditions, including water content, the seed condition also plays a vital role in germination. Seeds that are either dull-looking or maybe cracked do not germinate quickly. Before germination, the seeds need to soften. Softening of the seeds can be done by soaking them overnight or at least 8-12 hours in distilled water and at 65-70° F. Transfer the soaked seeds to a seedling tray. Another factor is the Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium ratio of 3:1:2 in the vegetative stage.


  • Rainfall and water retention: Hemp does not grow well to overwatering or over-drying of soil. Higher calcium levels and water retention in heavy clay soils make it non-favorable for high yield of Hemp. For the same reason, heavy rainfall causes the growth of Hemp to reduce and, in turn, smaller returns. The optimal rain is only 10-14 inches during the life cycle of the cannabis variant.


  • Planting: The planting of hemp plants will be different for different variants. For example, the plants used for fibers can be planted very firmly. However, those under the CBD variant need lots of space. So, plantation of the CBD hemp variety should be 1500-4000 plants per acre. In the case of the fiber yielding variety, 30,000 plants can be planted approximately per acre of land. 


  • Nutrients: The presence of nutrients in the soil in the right proportion is very much needed for the successful cultivation of Hemp. Testing the soil before plantation is a vital part of high yield. The optimum levels of fertilizers contain 125-200 lbs of nitrogen, about 30 lbs of phosphate, and 20 lbs of potash. The amounts are approximately 200 acres of land. The Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium ratio of 1:3:4 in the flowering stage and then 0:3:4 afterward is good for the yield.  


  • Growing cycle and challenges: Pests and insects hamper the growth of hemp plants. However, many farmers choose organic pest and insect control methods rather than using pesticides or insecticides. The natural and organic solutions found to control pests, insects, and plant diseases are more effective as well as less harmful. Companion planting is one of the natural solutions that help in resisting lawn pests and plant diseases to a great extent. For Hemp, companion cultivation plants can be basil, cilantro, sage, chives, peppermint, beans, garlic, etc. Generally, CBD hemp growth cycles vary from 90-120 days, and flowering starts in the first 60 days. So, it would be best if you restricted pests and insects in this growth cycle. 


  • Miscellaneous factors: The presence of male plants results in the pollination of female plants that result in higher seed production, low-quality buds, and also reduction of CBD yield per acre. So, removing the male plants from the field is an essential factor in getting high yield CBD hemp. You will need at least a crew member for every 5 acres for your hemp harvest. The last part is drying the CBD hemp plants, and the different ways like dehumidifiers, fans, warehouse floors, and mechanical dryers, etc. are the standard options. Choose the affordable option for your cultivation.
